Your Motorcycle Policy Replaces the Bike — Not the Paycheck

Gregory M. Sloan, CLU®, ChFC®, Licensed Insurance Representative · NPN 2145633

A motorcycle policy is built for the machine and liability. Rider households still need a separate conversation about income protection — without attacking the moto agent who wrote the bike coverage.

Executive Summary

  • Motorcycle / vehicle coverage helps with the bike and liability; it is not designed to replace household income if the rider does not come home.
  • NHTSA’s Motorcycles: 2023 Data still frames why that gap matters: nearly 28× fatality and nearly 5× injury rates per mile versus passenger-car occupants — population patterns, not personal predictions.
  • A confidential informational review with a Licensed Insurance Representative is informational — not a Progressive-style bike quote engine and not a promise of approval.

Two coverages, two jobs — without attacking the moto agent

Many riders (and partners) hear “I’m insured” and stop there. Often that means the motorcycle policy is in force — physical damage, liability, maybe uninsured motorist on the vehicle side. That coverage matters. Keep appropriate bike coverage with the specialist who knows the machine.

What that policy is not built to do is replace a paycheck: mortgage or rent, childcare, shared debts, or the income others counted on if a fatal crash ends the rider’s earning role. Unpacking that assumption is not an attack on motorcycle agents. It is category clarity. Vehicle insurance and household life-protection paths do different jobs.

Vehicle / moto policy Household / life-protection path
Helps with the bike and liability Helps address income / obligation questions if the rider dies
Does not replace a paycheck Does not repair or insure the motorcycle

Why the household gap shows up next to federal per-mile data

The gap is easier to see next to how NHTSA measures motorcycle risk. In Traffic Safety Facts — Motorcycles: 2023 Data (Report DOT HS 813 732), rates are per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT):

Those figures describe population patterns. They are not a forecast for any one rider, not medical advice, and not an underwriting decision. Optional newer glance — NHTSA Motorcycles: 2024 Data (DOT HS 813 824): fatality rate nearly 27 times higher (28.00 vs 1.05), about 3% registered and 0.7% VMT — always label the year. None of this says “sell fear.” It says household planning should not stop when the bike policy renews.

Gas or electric, the machine conversation can include mechanical points (torque delivery, quieter approach, battery-pack mass) as information only. NHTSA sheets used here do not authorize invented e-motorcycle brand fatality multipliers.

Illustrative amounts, not a quote engine — then a confidential review

This site is not Progressive-style motorcycle vehicle quoting and has no bike-premium calculator. If face amounts come up in a conversation — including about $101k, $201k, or $301k — treat them only as illustrative amounts discussed with a Licensed Insurance Representative, subject to product rules and underwriting. Not an instant quote. Not a guarantee of issue or price. Carriers decide. Gregory M. Sloan does not underwrite. No “you will be approved.”

A confidential informational review typically means: clarify what the bike policy already covers; map household needs separately; discuss accidental death / life-protection paths without treating the call as an online application or automatic approval. Independent advisory — straight talk, not scare copy.

Understand how to protect your household before you assume the bike policy is enough.
